Challenges for the Angler
Alleghany County has much to offer the traveling angler.
Mill Pond Once the Sparta Mill Pond and Dam meant good fishing and companionship. Heavy rains during the summer of 1969 destroyed the dam.
We boast over 80 miles of hatchery supported trout streams with over 24,000 fish stocked this season. A brief list includes:

  • Little River
  • Crab Creek
  • Brush Creek
  • Big Pine Creek
  • Laurel Branch
  • Big Glade Creek
  • Bledsoe Creek
  • Pine Swamp Creek
  • Prathers Creek
  • Cranberry Creek
  • Piney Fork
  • Meadow Fork
As well as wild trout waters such as Ramey Creek, Big Sandy Creek and Stone Mountain Creek.
We also lay claim to one of the most beautiful sections of the New River with Smallmouth Bass and Musky, being the two predominate sport species. This section of the New River also supports catfish and many other species.
Stone Mountain State Park, has a Delayed Harvest Trout Stream and a Catch & Release only stream. There is not a single reason a traveling angler would not be happy staying in Alleghany!
